The Wizarding World in Universal Orlando Resort is where true Harry Potter fans and their dreams of the movies and books come to life. My family of 6 just vacationed at Universal in mid-January. The weather was cool but the fun was epic! I'd love to take you own a little stroll through Diagon Alley and our favorite things to do and see.
Diagon Alley is the half of Wizarding World of Harry Potter located in Universal Studios. The other half of Wizarding World is Hogsmeade which is located in Islands of Adventure. There is so much to experience in both lands but I'll just be highlighting Diagon Alley in this post. Be sure to check back soon for our adventures in Hogsmeade soon.
When beginning your adventure into Diagon Alley you must first find the entrance. I will not spoil it here, nor do I spoil it for my clients. It's fun just to go and experience it for yourself. Here's a hint once your are near King's Cross Station you actually begin your Wizarding World Experience. Make sure to experience the Knight's Bus and the shrunken head. Take a peek in the back of the bus too! Be sure to call the Ministry of Magic from the Telephone Booth.... Dial MAGIC! Then take a stroll through London and the house rows. You may spot Kreacher the House Elf spying out of a window. Once you've taken in the sights of London it's time to find your way through the hidden entrance to Diagon Alley where you will be meeted by the epic street view of the Dragon of Gringotts.
Every wall, every window, every view has so much to see. Spend some time just enjoying the atmosphere and looking for surpises in every nook and cranny. Maybe grab a Butterbeer as you stroll.
What do all Wizards and Witches need in to be truly a part of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter? Well a wand, of course. Interactive Wands make the magic in both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. They are a must for every Muggle visiting the worlds.
You can purchase a wand and interactive wand in any Universal souvenir shop in both the parks and resorts. But I highly recommend waiting until you are in Diagon Alley to purchase your wand from Ollivander's Wand Shop. Interactive Wands are the only way to do magic throughout the world. Be sure to spend a little extra and go for the interactive one.
You can Choose the Wand or let the Wand Choose You.... Just like in the books there is a Wand Choosing Experience inside the shop. You can stand in a line to enter the shop and watch, even possibly participate in the experience. Or just go to the next entrance door of the shop to go directly in and choose your own wand. The Wizards inside are there to help you look, learn and decide which is the best wand for you, so be sure to ask every question. They love to give secrets about the famous wand owners and how to best choose the one for you.
Once you have aquired your wand you can then head of to cast spells. Grab your map, look for the medalions on the ground and cast away. You'll find spots all over Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. Just look on the ground for tips on how to flick your wrist to create the magic. If you are having trouble learing the correct technique no need to worry. Witches and Wizards are wondering the land to help you practice your craft just in case you run into 'He who must not be named".
After all the Spell casting it may be time to grab some fish n chips from The Leaky Cauldron. This is a great place to enjoy some unique dishes from the Harry Potter series and relax in the ambiance of this Bitish pub. On the menu you'll find Bangers & Mash, Toad in the Hole, Fisherman's Pie, Butterbeer, Pumpkin Juice, Dragon Scale and more. It's a must dine location while visiting Diagon Alley.
Now it's time to take a ride on Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts ..... actually you may want to do so before you fill those bellies with a delicious meal. You'll find it in the Bank under the fire breathing dragon, it can't be missed. You'll start your adventure in the magnificent lobby of Gringott's Bank with the goblin tellers. And, then explore through the basement and dungeons of the Bank. This is an epic ride which takes you through an adventure which feels like you are right there with Harry, Hermione and Ron. It's an trilling and exciting adventure not to be skipped.
After nearly not escaping from Gringott's Bank your visit in Diagon Alley may be coming to an end. But be sure to save some time to grab a Butter Beer Flavor Ice Cream Cone from Florean Fortescue's, check out a live stage show, grab a Wizard's Brew at The Hopping Pot, dare down Knockturn Alley, do a little shopping and so much more. If you think an hour or so in Diagon Alley for a Harry Potter Fan is enough.... you many want to reconsider. We easily spent half a day just on our first day of vacation in Diagaon Alley. It's a completely immersive and magical experience!
